Old Email Domains: Which Still Work and Which Are Dead ( List) - SMTPedia technical reference

Many people still use, or still have on file, email addresses from the dial-up and early broadband years: aol.com, sbcglobal.net, wanadoo.fr, voila.fr, freeserve.co.uk. Some of these old email domains still work perfectly, often on a bigger provider’s servers. Others were shut down and every message to them bounces. This page tracks 200 old email domains from 100 providers, with their current status, checked in November 2026.

My old email address stopped working: what to do

  1. Check its status in the table above. If it says “Still works”, the address is fine; your mail app probably needs new server settings. Open the linked guide.
  2. If it says “Paid or at risk”, act before the deadline. Sign up for the paid plan if you want to keep the address, or export your mail and contacts while you still can.
  3. If it says “Closed”, move on. The mailbox cannot be recovered. Open a new address with Gmail, Outlook.com or another provider, then update it on your bank, government and shopping accounts, starting with the ones that use email for password resets.

Old email domains in your mailing list

If you send newsletters or transactional email, closed domains are a deliverability problem. Every message to them bounces, and a high bounce rate tells mailbox providers that your list is not maintained.

  • Remove closed domains from your list now, and block them at import so they never come back.
  • Contact subscribers on “Paid or at risk” domains before the shutdown date and ask for a new address.
  • Do not wait for bounces. A retired domain can be turned into a spam trap later, by its owner or by whoever buys it.

Cleaning an old list? SMTPing checks each address with a real SMTP handshake and flags dead domains, closed mailboxes, catch-alls and disposable addresses before you send. Twenty-five free checks a day, no card required.

Frequently asked questions

What email domains no longer exist?

Well-known examples include voila.fr (closed 2016), orange.net, freeserve.co.uk and wanadoo.co.uk (2017), tesco.net (2018), ono.com (2019), orange.es and wanadoo.es (2025) and goo.jp (2026). Use the search box in the table above to check any domain.

What are some old email providers that still work?

AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo, Juno, NetZero, AT&T domains such as sbcglobal.net and bellsouth.net, verizon.net, comcast.net, t-online.de, wanadoo.fr, laposte.net and btinternet.com all still deliver mail. Many now run on a bigger provider’s servers: AT&T addresses on Yahoo Mail, netscape.net on AOL.

Can I recover an old email address after the provider shut it down?

Almost never. When a provider closes its mail service, mailboxes and their content are deleted, and the provider does not hand addresses to anyone else. If the service moved to a paid successor (TDS to Everymail, Exetel to The Messaging Company), you may keep the address only if you signed up before the deadline.

Why do internet providers shut down email?

Running consumer mailboxes costs money, attracts spam and earns little, while most customers already use Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo. ISPs therefore close their mail service, hand it to a paid third party, or move it to a big webmail provider.

What is the difference between an old domain that still works and a dead one?

A domain that still works has live mail servers: messages are delivered, even if the brand behind it disappeared years ago (aon.at, wanadoo.fr, netscape.net). A dead domain has no working mail server: every message bounces, and continuing to send to it hurts the sender’s reputation.

Sources and method

Statuses are based on provider announcements and on SMTPedia’s own checks of each domain’s mail servers. Last reviewed: November 2026. If you know of a change, please let us know.
