Planet.nl email now runs on KPN infrastructure
Planet Internet was acquired by KPN and the standalone Planet brand was formally retired in 2008. Approximately 600,000 subscribers migrated to KPN with their @planet.nl addresses preserved as legacy aliases on the KPN mail platform. The historical Planet hostnames (imap.planet.nl, smtp.planet.nl) are no longer authoritative — you must configure your mail client with the current KPN servers documented below. What happened to the Planet brand
Planet Internet launched in 1995 as one of the earliest consumer ISPs in the Netherlands, offering dial-up access and a horizontal web portal at planet.nl. Behind the scenes Planet was already owned by KPN (Koninklijke KPN N.V.), the Dutch national telecom operator, and was operated as a distinct consumer brand throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s alongside other KPN consumer identities.
In 2008 KPN consolidated its consumer brands under a single KPN identity as part of a broader corporate simplification.
