ActiveCampaign is an Email marketing platform founded in 2003, headquartered in the United States. Starting at $15/mo, it targets teams whose automations hand a scored lead straight to a built-in CRM, and who accept billing on every contact stored. What is ActiveCampaign?
ActiveCampaign is older than most of the platforms it competes with. Jason VandeBoom started it in 2003 selling downloadable software that customers installed on their own servers, and by the early 2010s the company was running eight separate products. It cut the line to one, moved to a subscription model, and then stayed bootstrapped for thirteen years before taking $20 million from Silversmith in 2016. A $240 million round led by Tiger Global followed in April 2021, at a valuation the company put above $3 billion.
The centre of gravity is the automation canvas rather than the campaign. Branching runs on if/else forks, conditional splits, jumps and waits that can hold a contact until a condition is met. A JavaScript snippet feeds page views back as site tracking, custom events arrive over HTTP, and both contacts and deals carry their own scores, which is what lets a marketing sequence hand a qualified lead straight to the built-in CRM pipeline.
Two things are worth knowing before choosing it. ActiveCampaign states plainly that it offers no SMTP relay in or out, and points transactional senders to Postmark, which it has owned since May 2022. And since 3 November 2025, new accounts are billed on every contact stored, unsubscribed and bounced ones included, not only the active ones.
