Bredbandsbolaget email has been permanently deleted
Bredbandsbolaget was absorbed into Telenor Sverige on 15 May 2018, and the @bredbandsbolaget.se and @bredband.net webmail was transferred to the Telenor webmail platform. In September 2023, Telenor announced the shutdown of its entire consumer webmail service due to declining usage, and on 15 November 2023 all @bredband.net and @bredbandsbolaget.se mail addresses were permanently deleted. There is no way to recover mailboxes or resume access. This guide explains the historical context and how to migrate remaining account references to a modern email service.
Bredbandsbolaget (The Broadband Company, abbreviated BBB, B2 or BB) was a Swedish internet service provider founded in 1998. It was one of Sweden’s earliest fiber-focused ISPs and, by 2003, had become the country’s second-largest broadband operator, serving hundreds of thousands of consumer and business customers through both proprietary fiber and municipal open networks (stadsnät, including Open Universe). Consumer email was included as a free service tied to the internet subscription, with addresses under the @bredbandsbolaget.se and later @bredband.net domains.
Bredbandsbolaget was acquired by Norwegian telecom Telenor in 2005 for approximately 6 billion SEK (about USD 821 million at the time) as part of Telenor’s Nordic broadband expansion. The two brands operated in parallel for 13 years before the formal integration on 15 May 2018, when all Bredbandsbolaget customers became Telenor Sverige customers and the webmail was migrated to Telenor’s mail platform.

| 15 November 2023 | All @bredband.net and @bredbandsbolaget.se mail addresses permanently deleted |
Recommended replacement: Gmail
There is no direct Swedish successor for @bredbandsbolaget.se or @bredband.net email. Telenor has exited the consumer webmail business entirely, and every other major Swedish ISP that once offered free consumer email has followed suit (Tele2 shut down @swipnet.se on 1 February 2021, Com Hem consumer email wound down after the April 2021 brand retirement). For a durable free replacement independent of any ISP, we recommend Gmail.

Migration checklist
- Create a Gmail account at accounts.google.com/signup
- Update the account email on your bank, government (Skatteverket, Försäkringskassan), utilities, and streaming services first
- Export contacts from any local backup (mail client address book, phone) and import into Google Contacts
- Update your professional profile, CV, and business cards
- Notify friends and family through a single announcement message
- If you have local IMAP-synced messages in Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or Outlook, drag them into your new Gmail account
Alternatives to Gmail
- Outlook.com (Microsoft) — free, integrates with Windows and Office, 15 GB storage
- Proton Mail (Switzerland) — end-to-end encrypted, Swiss jurisdiction, free tier at 1 GB
- Tutanota (Germany) — open source, EU jurisdiction, free tier at 1 GB
Common issues after the Bredbandsbolaget shutdown
Mail client cannot connect to smtp.bredband.net
The Telenor mail servers stopped accepting connections for @bredband.net authentication after 15 November 2023. Remove the account from your mail client and configure your new replacement address instead.
Cannot recover old messages
Telenor provided approximately two months of advance notice (September to mid-November 2023) and a self-service export option during that window. Users who missed the window cannot recover data because the mailboxes were permanently deleted. If you had a local IMAP-synced copy in Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or Outlook, those messages remain on your device.
FAQ
Is @bredbandsbolaget.se still working in 2026?
No. All mailboxes under @bredbandsbolaget.se and @bredband.net were permanently deleted by Telenor on 15 November 2023. Any mail sent to these addresses will hard-bounce.
Can I create a new @bredbandsbolaget.se address?
No. The domain is no longer used for consumer email under Telenor Sverige.
Did Telenor automatically migrate my Bredbandsbolaget address to a Telenor address?
No. Telenor closed its entire consumer webmail platform in November 2023, not just the Bredbandsbolaget-inherited domains. There was no like-for-like replacement address offered.
Are my old emails recoverable?
Only if you exported them during the September to November 2023 notice window, or kept a local synced copy in a desktop mail client. Server-side data has been permanently deleted.
Which Swedish free email service should I use instead?
There is no viable Swedish-hosted free consumer email in 2026 (Bredbandsbolaget, Com Hem, Tele2, and Telenor consumer webmails have all been discontinued). Gmail, Outlook.com, Proton Mail, or Tutanota are the practical replacements.
