Aon.at email now runs on A1 Telekom Austria infrastructure

AON (Austria Online) was the internet brand of Telekom Austria, the incumbent Austrian telecom operator. Telekom Austria Group renamed itself A1 Telekom Austria Group on 14 November 2017, retiring the AON brand and consolidating consumer services under the A1 identity. The @aon.at consumer email service was migrated to the A1 Mail platform and continues to work today as a legacy alias alongside @a1.net. The historical AON hostnames are no longer authoritative, you must configure your mail client with the current A1 servers documented below.

What happened to the AON brand

AON (Austria Online) was launched by Telekom Austria in the mid-1990s as the incumbent operator’s consumer internet brand, offering dial-up and later ADSL access with a bundled @aon.at email address. AON became the dominant Austrian consumer ISP through the 2000s alongside the parallel @a1.net brand.

On 14 November 2017, Telekom Austria Group renamed itself A1 Telekom Austria Group as part of a one-brand strategy across its European subsidiaries (A1 Slovenia, A1 Bulgaria, A1 Hrvatska ex-Vipnet, A1 Srbija ex-Vip mobile). The AON commercial brand was retired and consumer services consolidated under A1. The @aon.at mail domain was preserved on the A1 Mail platform, using the securemail/securepop/securesmtp.a1.net hostnames.

Common issues

Mail client cannot connect to imap.aon.at or smtp.aon.at

The legacy AON hostnames are no longer authoritative for @aon.at mailboxes. Replace them with securemail.a1.net, securepop.a1.net, and securesmtp.a1.net in your mail client. Note the “secure” prefix that A1 uses on all mail-related hostnames.

Authentication fails with the old AON password

Passwords were reset during the 2017 Telekom Austria to A1 rebrand. Reset yours through Mein A1 using the account recovery flow tied to your A1 customer number.

Cannot access the old AON webmail

The historical AON webmail portal was retired at the A1 rebrand. Access your mailbox through email.a1.net instead, signing in with your @aon.at address and A1 password.
