The Best: Designer-grade email without a designer
The Worst: Feature ceiling criticised in every review vintage since 2020
Buy Flodesk for one reason: it makes the best-looking email in the category, and it does it without a designer. That is not a soft claim. Of the 158 distinct Capterra reviews we read and dated, at least 53 praise the design and at least 52 praise how easy it is. Those are the two loudest themes in the corpus, and they have been the two loudest themes every year since 2020.
Do not buy it for anything else. The same corpus criticises the feature ceiling 28 times, and unlike every other complaint, that one appears in every single year from 2020 to 2026 without a gap. Segmentation and workflows draw 14 more. This is a design tool that sends email, and six years of reviewers have been saying the same sentence about where it stops.
And the price argument is dead. Flodesk was famous for one flat fee with unlimited subscribers. That plan was retired for new members on December 2, 2025. New buyers get ordinary subscriber-tiered pricing from $19/mo on annual billing. If you already hold the flat rate, keep it, because you cannot buy it again.
Flodesk launched in 2019, built by Rebecca Shostak, Martha Bitar and Trong Dong after Y Combinator turned them down. It has taken no outside capital since. The company says it was profitable within weeks and passed $36 million in annual recurring revenue while staying entirely bootstrapped. Shostak became chief executive in January 2026, with Bitar moving to executive chair.
That independence matters, because it explains both halves of this review. Nobody made Flodesk add features it did not want. Nobody made it raise prices either, for six years.
Then it did. The pricing page now states it plainly: the original flat-rate unlimited plan was retired for new members on December 2, 2025, and anyone who subscribed before that date keeps the legacy plan for as long as the subscription never lapses. New buyers choose between Lite, Pro and Everything, priced on active subscriber count.
This is the single fact that dates every older article about this product. Flodesk’s reputation was built on a sentence that is no longer true for anyone arriving today. If a comparison you are reading says “one flat price, unlimited subscribers,” it was written before December 2025, or it was copied from something that was.
The second thing to know before you evaluate the free plan: it does not send email. The Free tier covers forms, landing pages and link-in-bio pages. That is not a small free plan. It is a different product. Flodesk is a paid tool with a free front door, and that is worth understanding before you compare its zero-dollar tier against anyone else’s.
Third, and this one surprises people: there is no SMTP relay, and the API has no send endpoint. The rebuilt v1 API, relaunched in January 2026, manages subscribers, segments and workflows. It cannot send a message. If your application needs to trigger an email, Flodesk is not in the running, and no amount of feature comparison changes that.
| Product | Flodesk (independent, bootstrapped since 2019, no outside capital) |
| Category | Creator email platform |
| Best for | Photographers, coaches, course sellers and studios whose brand is visual |
| Not for | Crypto, finance, adult, supplements, pharma, gambling, lead generation and get-rich-quick, all banned outright. Also anyone needing branching automation or a send endpoint. |
| Starting price 2026 | From $19/mo on annual billing, priced on active subscribers |
| Free plan | Yes, but it cannot send email. Forms, landing pages and link-in-bio only. |
| API | v1, rebuilt January 2026. Subscribers, segments, workflows. No send endpoint. |
| MCP support | Native. Flodesk ships its own MCP server, which puts it ahead of Mailchimp and MailerLite on this one axis. |
| Native integrations | 15+, plus Zapier and Pabbly bridges |
| G2 rating | 4.8 / 5 (302 reviews, read August 27, 2026) |
| Capterra rating | 4.5 / 5 (167 reviews, read August 27, 2026). Ease of use 4.7, customer service 4.4. |
| Trustpilot rating | N/A. Source unreachable, see Third-party validation. |
| Deliverability | Not independently measured. No public inbox-placement panel publishes a Flodesk figure. See the section below. |
| Authentication | Custom sending domain with SPF and DKIM through the app. DMARC is yours to add. |
| Commerce | Flodesk Checkout sells products, courses and memberships through Stripe. Zero platform fee. |
At least 53 of the 158 distinct reviews name the design, the beauty or the aesthetics. At least 27 more name the templates specifically. No other email tool we have read produces this pattern. On Mailchimp the top praise cluster is the interface; on MailerLite it is ease of use. On Flodesk it is how the finished email looks, which is a different thing, and it is the reason people pay a premium for a narrower tool.
Ease of use draws at least 52 mentions, effectively tied with design. Capterra scores ease of use at 4.7/5, its highest sub-score for this product. The block editor with custom fonts, image shapes, countdown timers and polls is doing work that would otherwise need a designer and an HTML template, and the reviewers who say so are overwhelmingly not marketers by trade.
Flodesk Checkout sells digital products, courses and memberships through Stripe, and Flodesk charges no platform fee. You pay Stripe’s processing cost and nothing else. Among email tools that have added commerce this is unusual, and it compounds: on a course selling at $500, a 5 percent platform fee elsewhere is $25 per sale. That is the whole monthly subscription, recovered on one transaction.
This is the finding we did not expect. Support draws 12 criticisms in the corpus. All twelve are dated 2023 or earlier. Of the 74 distinct reviews dated 2024, 2025 or 2026, zero criticise support. We re-ran the count with a deliberately wide net across support, service, help, reply, respond, chat, ticket and “no one” and still got nothing. The criticism did not move vocabulary. It disappeared. Flodesk fixed something around 2023 and nobody has written about it.
The API was rebuilt and relaunched in January 2026, and it ships with a native MCP server. For a bootstrapped company of this size, being ahead of Mailchimp and MailerLite on agent tooling is a real signal about where the engineering attention goes. It is also, as the next section explains, an odd place to have spent it.
This is the spine of the review. At least 28 of the 158 distinct reviews criticise the feature ceiling: limited, missing, not enough, no advanced option. The mentions run from 2020 to 2026 with at least one in every year. It is the only complaint in the corpus that never takes a year off.
Put next to the support finding, the two lines tell the whole story. Flodesk repaired its support and never raised its ceiling. One complaint has a death date. The other does not. That is a verdict with two numbers behind it rather than an adjective, and it is what you are actually deciding about when you shop this product.
At least 14 reviews name segmentation, automation or workflows as the limit, dated 2021 through 2026. Flodesk does sequences. It does not do the conditional branching, behavioural triggers or revenue attribution that lifecycle marketing runs on. If your email programme has an if-then in it, this is the wrong tool, and Kit or ActiveCampaign are the honest recommendations.
For six years the trade was clear. Flodesk did less, and charged one flat fee for unlimited subscribers, so a list of 50,000 paid what a list of 500 paid. That made the ceiling tolerable, because you were buying a price model as much as a product.
Since December 2, 2025 new members buy subscriber-tiered pricing like everyone else. The product did not get wider. The pricing got ordinary. A buyer arriving in 2026 is being asked to accept the old limitations without the old compensation, and that is the single biggest change in how this platform should be evaluated.
Flodesk’s Free tier gives you forms, landing pages and link-in-bio pages. It does not send email. This is documented rather than hidden, but it makes every free-tier comparison meaningless: MailerLite gives 2,500 sends a month at zero, Brevo gives 300 per day forever, and Flodesk gives none. If you were planning to try before paying, the mechanism is the trial, not the free plan.
No SMTP relay has ever existed here. The rebuilt v1 API manages subscribers, segments and workflows, and has no send endpoint. So the native MCP server, impressive as it is, lets an agent organise your list but never mail it. For a SaaS product, a marketplace, or anything that sends a receipt, Flodesk is not a candidate at any price. Our SMTP settings tab covers what to use instead.
Flodesk publishes the clearest prohibited-industry list of any platform we have profiled, and it is long. Banned outright: cryptocurrency; banking, loans, investments, financial services and credit or debt management; adult entertainment including private content memberships; nutritional and weight-loss supplements; pharmaceuticals; lotteries, gambling and sweepstakes; lead generation including anyone selling emails, leads or followers; and get-rich-quick schemes.
Three more are restricted rather than banned: MLM and network marketing, real estate, and affiliate marketing. Note the nuance on that last one, because it differs from Mailchimp, which bans affiliate campaigns outright. Flodesk allows affiliate content but prohibits “emails that contain 100% affiliate marketing content.” Mixed is fine. Pure promotion is not.
The corpus corroborates it at small scale. Three of the six one-star reviews are account approval or suspension stories. All three are dated 2023 or earlier, which is the same cut-off as the support complaints, so this may be a historic enforcement wave rather than a current one. We are not going to claim that from three data points. We are going to say that the policy as written today is strict, final, and unusually explicit about the categories it will not serve.
We read the complete Capterra corpus, all pages. The source served 167 rows against a declared count of 167, containing 9 duplicates, which leaves 158 distinct reviews. Every figure below is counted on those 158.
The distribution: 119 five-star, 19 four-star, 7 three-star, 7 two-star, 6 one-star. By year: 2021 is the largest vintage at 43, then 2025 at 38, 2026 at 27, 2022 at 25, 2023 at 12, 2024 at 9, 2020 at 4. That skew matters. This corpus leans old, so a complaint that stops in 2023 is genuinely a stopped complaint, and a complaint that continues into 2026 is genuinely a live one.
The mixed cluster, and it is templates. At least 27 excerpts praise the templates and at least 8 criticise them, for opposite reasons on the same object. The praise says the templates make an amateur look art-directed. The criticism says there are too few and they are too rigid to escape. Both are accurate, and they describe two different buyers: one who wants the decision made for them, and one who wants a starting point. Flodesk serves the first one very well.
The second cluster is price, at least 15 praising against at least 4 criticising, and it is worth reading with a date in hand. Nearly all the praise predates December 2, 2025 and describes the flat unlimited plan. Those reviewers were not praising a price you can buy today. This is the same trap that catches every comparison article about this product.
The third is support, and it is not a split opinion at all. Three praises against twelve criticisms looks damning until you date them: the twelve stop in 2023, and the praises are dated 2021 and 2025. That is not disagreement between users. It is a company before and after a fix.
Six categories, scored 1 to 10. The overall is the unweighted arithmetic mean, rounded to one decimal.
| Category | Rating | Best alternative for this |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of use Editor, output quality, time to a good-looking email | 8.5 | Flodesk wins this category outright |
| Automation depth Branching, triggers, segmentation | 4.5 | Kit for creators, ActiveCampaign for anything conditional |
| Deliverability Inbox placement, authentication, pool hygiene | 7.5 | Postmark if placement is measurable and mission-critical |
| Support Response time, quality, escalation path | 7.0 | MailerLite, which scores 4.8 on Capterra service |
| Pricing value What you get per dollar, post-December 2025 | 4.0 | MailerLite at $12/mo for a wider product |
| API and MCP Developer experience, agent support | 7.0 | Postmark, whose MCP server can actually send |
| Overall | 6.4 | Marginally above Mailchimp at 6.3, a full point below MailerLite at 7.4 |
We could not find a single independent inbox-placement panel that publishes a figure for Flodesk. EmailToolTester and EmailDeliverabilityReport both publish rounds covering Mailchimp, MailerLite, ActiveCampaign, GetResponse and Brevo. Neither covers Flodesk. Under our first rule, no source means no number, so we are not printing one.
The 7.5 above therefore rests on three things we can check, and you should weigh it accordingly. First, deliverability does not appear as a complaint cluster anywhere in the 158-review corpus, which is unusual and meaningful given that reviewers complain freely about everything else. Second, Flodesk requires a custom sending domain with SPF and DKIM configured through the app. Third, a shared pool policed by an eight-industry ban list with no appeal is, by construction, a cleaner pool than a permissive one. That is a reasoned estimate from policy and silence, not a measurement, and we would rather say so than dress it up.
Photographers, interior designers, coaches, studios. At least 53 of 158 reviewers name the design as the best thing about this product, and nothing else in the category produces that pattern. If your audience judges you on how the message looks before they read it, this is the tool.
Flodesk Checkout runs on Stripe with zero platform fee. On a course at $500, a competitor’s 5 percent cut is $25 a sale. Two sales a month and the subscription has paid for itself before you count a single email.
Keep it. Subscribers before December 2, 2025 stay on unlimited for as long as the subscription never lapses, and it cannot be repurchased. If your list is large, that plan is now worth more than it was when you bought it. Do not let it cancel by accident.
Crypto, finance and lending, adult, supplements, pharma, gambling, lead generation, get-rich-quick. These are named outright, suspension is final, support cannot restore an account, and opening another one is itself a violation. This is not a grey area to test.
At least 14 of 158 reviewers hit the segmentation and workflow ceiling, and at least 28 hit the feature ceiling generally, in every year since 2020. Kit for creator monetisation, ActiveCampaign for real lifecycle work.
The Free plan does not send email. It gives forms, landing pages and link-in-bio. MailerLite sends 2,500 a month at zero and Brevo sends 300 a day forever. On Flodesk, the trial is the try-before-you-buy, not the free tier.
No SMTP relay, and no send endpoint on the v1 API. Receipts, password resets, order confirmations and app notifications are all out of scope, whatever plan you buy. Postmark from $15/mo is the reference point for that traffic.
All figures read on August 27, 2026.
| Source | Score | Reviews |
| G2 | 4.8 / 5 | 302 |
| Capterra | 4.5 / 5 | 167 |
| Trustpilot | N/A | Not retrieved |
Trustpilot refused every retrieval path we tried, and its own search snippet carries neither a score nor a count for this product. No source means N/A, never an estimate presented as a measurement.
The G2 and Capterra gap is 0.3, well under the 1.5 point threshold at which we stop and explain a divergence, so there is nothing here to reconcile. The sub-scores are more interesting than the headline: Capterra puts ease of use at 4.7 and customer service at 4.4. That is the exact mirror of MailerLite, where service outscores ease. Two independent products, opposite shapes, and in Flodesk’s case the shape is a lifetime average still carrying the 2020 to 2023 support era that the corpus shows has ended.
One integrity check, free to run. The 158 distinct reviews break down as 119 five-star, 19 four-star, 7 three-star, 7 two-star and 6 one-star. That averages 4.506 against a published 4.5. Concordance to the decimal, which tells us the transcription is sound. One caveat we will not hide: Capterra declares 167 reviews and served 167 rows, of which 9 were duplicates of page-one entries. Either the counter over-counts by 9, or 9 distinct reviews were never served to us. The duplicate pattern points to the second. That is why every figure in this review says “of the 158 rendered excerpts” rather than “of all reviews.”
Full ranked coverage on the Flodesk alternatives tab.
Is Flodesk free? There is a Free plan, but it does not send email. It covers forms, landing pages and link-in-bio pages only. To send a campaign you need a paid plan, starting at $19/mo on annual billing. The free trial, not the free plan, is how you test the sending product.
Is there a Flodesk free trial? Yes, and it is the right way to evaluate the tool given that the Free tier cannot send. Because the pricing model changed on December 2, 2025, take the trial now rather than relying on an older article’s description of what you will be charged afterwards.
How much does Flodesk cost? From $19/mo on annual billing, priced on active subscriber count across three tiers. The old flat-rate unlimited plan is no longer sold. Full breakdown on our pricing tab.
Is Flodesk worth it? We rate it 6.4/10. It is worth it if the appearance of your email is a business asset, and you can live inside a feature ceiling that 28 of 158 reviewers have named in every year since 2020. It stopped being worth it on price alone when the flat rate was retired.
Is Flodesk better than MailerLite? On design, clearly. On everything else, no. MailerLite starts at $12/mo against Flodesk’s $19, has a free tier that sends, scores 4.8 on Capterra service against Flodesk’s 4.4, and does not stop at the same ceiling. Our scores: MailerLite 7.4, Flodesk 6.4.
What are the best Flodesk alternatives? Kit if you sell and need automation. MailerLite if you want value and breadth. Mailchimp if you need integrations. Full list on the alternatives tab.
Can Flodesk suspend my account? Yes, and the decision is final. Eight industries are banned outright and nine documented triggers can cause a suspension, including purchased or scraped lists. Support cannot restore a suspended account and opening a replacement is itself prohibited. Read the prohibited industries list before you migrate.
What is Flodesk? A bootstrapped US creator email platform launched in 2019, built around design-led templates and a commission-free Stripe checkout. No SMTP, no send endpoint. Full background on the Flodesk hub.
