Legacy brand notice

@aon.at mail now runs on A1’s mail servers

AON was the internet brand of Telekom Austria. After Telekom Austria and mobilkom austria merged into A1 Telekom Austria in 2010, the group’s product names were brought together under the single A1 brand in 2010 and 2011. Existing @aon.at addresses still work and use the same mail servers as @a1.net. Old setups that point to aon.at hostnames, port 110 or port 25 should be switched to the A1 settings below.

Aon.at email settings (A1 servers)

These are the encrypted settings published by A1 in its official server settings FAQ. A1 uses one host, securemail.a1.net, for incoming and outgoing mail.

ProtocolServerPortEncryption
IMAP (incoming, recommended)securemail.a1.net993SSL/TLS
POP3 (incoming)securemail.a1.net995SSL/TLS
SMTP (outgoing)securemail.a1.net587STARTTLS

Username: your full @aon.at address. Password: your A1 email password. Outgoing server: turn on authentication with the same username and password. Webmail: a1.net/mail.

What happened to the AON brand

AON (often written aon or Aon) was the consumer internet and fixed-line brand of Telekom Austria, the incumbent Austrian operator. Its customers received @aon.at email addresses with their internet access.

In July 2010, Telekom Austria TA AG and mobilkom austria AG merged into A1 Telekom Austria AG. In 2010 and 2011 the fixed-line, mobile and internet product names were brought together under the A1 umbrella brand, and the AON name disappeared from new products. The @aon.at domain stayed in service for existing mailboxes, which today use the same A1 mail infrastructure as @a1.net addresses.

If you would rather migrate

Same provider
A1.net
If you are still an A1 customer, ask A1 whether an @a1.net address is available on your contract. It uses the same servers as your @aon.at mailbox.
Independent
Gmail or Outlook.com
Free international mailboxes that do not depend on your internet provider. Both can import mail from an IMAP account.
German-language
GMX or Web.de
German-language webmail services widely used in Austria, also independent of your internet provider.

Common issues

An old Outlook setup with port 110 or port 25 stopped working

Many @aon.at accounts were set up years ago with unencrypted settings (POP3 on port 110, SMTP on port 25 without authentication). Change the account to securemail.a1.net: POP3 on 995 with SSL or IMAP on 993 with SSL, and SMTP on 587 with STARTTLS. In Outlook, also tick “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” and use the same settings as the incoming server.

Sending fails while receiving works

Check three things: the outgoing port is 587, the encryption is STARTTLS (not SSL/TLS), and SMTP authentication is turned on with your full @aon.at address and password.

Login is refused

Test your password in webmail at a1.net/mail first. If webmail accepts it, the problem is in the client settings; if not, reset the email password through your A1 account or A1 customer service.

  • Authentication failed: Always use your complete email address, never just the username portion.
  • Port blocked by ISP: Try alternative SMTP port as fallback.
  • SSL certificate errors: Ensure certificate validation is enabled in client settings.
  • Slow or no IMAP sync: Check folder subscriptions and enable all folders in client settings.
