What is The Bat!?
The Bat! stores all email in a proprietary mailbox format on your local drive. It does not use Windows MAPI, which isolates it from some system-level vulnerabilities affecting other Windows email clients. IMAP, POP3, and SMTP are supported; Microsoft Exchange requires third-party middleware or IMAP access.
Built-in S/MIME and OpenPGP encryption are standard features, not add-ons. The Bat! Voyager edition is a portable version that runs from a USB drive without installation useful for users who need to access email from multiple machines without leaving a trace on host systems.
The message template system is one of the most advanced in any desktop client: templates support conditional logic, macros, and custom variables, which allows detailed automation of reply formatting for different accounts or contact groups. Sorting office rules (message filters) can trigger on a wide range of conditions and run external programs as actions.
The interface is dated by modern standards it has not received a significant visual redesign in many years but it is stable and responds well to customization through layout options and themes.
