Campaign Monitor: Email marketing platform

Last verified Aug 27, 2026

Campaign Monitor is an Email marketing platform founded in 2004, headquartered in Australia. Starting at $11/mo, it targets agencies that resell email under their own markup and have each client billed directly. Our verdict: Ease 4.5 and service 4.5, and unlimited sending from $19. Watch for: No prices on the pricing page, no address for the SMTP relay. Rated 6.4/10 overall across ease of use, deliverability, and pricing value.

What is Campaign Monitor?

Campaign Monitor was written in Sydney in 2004 by two web designers, David Greiner and Ben Richardson, for their own agency clients. It stayed bootstrapped and profitable every quarter for a decade before taking US$250 million from Insight Venture Partners in April 2014, at the time the largest venture investment in an Australian technology company.

That agency origin is still visible in the product. A reseller sets a markup per client account, and Campaign Monitor bills the client directly and remits the margin monthly — MarkupPercentage and ClientPays are API fields, not a back-office arrangement. The API itself still answers on api.createsend.com.
