What this RFC defined

Understanding RFC 821 is therefore essential for anyone reading raw SMTP traces, analyzing bounce categories, or building a mail server implementation from first principles.
What replaced it
RFC 821 was superseded by RFC 2821 in April 2001, which was in turn replaced by RFC 5321 in October 2008. The evolution added ESMTP extensions (via RFC 1869), STARTTLS, SMTP AUTH, message size negotiation, 8BITMIME, and internationalized addresses. But the core command set and reply structure remain unchanged. If you memorize the RFC 821 command list, you understand roughly ninety percent of modern SMTP; the extensions are optional layers negotiated on top of the RFC 821 foundation.
